Amberley:

I was studying in the IB PYP and MYP program in primary and middle school. However, I switched to A-levels for high school because they have fewer extra requirements like mandatory subject research and writing papers of all sort. I thought that this would allow more time for me to explore my extracurricular interests and activities.

Amberley:

I didn’t really struggle with TOEFL as English came quite naturally to me. I really enjoy listening to English songs and watching foreign films. Plus, when I play games, I switch the language to English. This helps me automatically relate new phrases to something similar I’ve seen before, which really aids in memorizing vocabulary. This method works the same for both TOEFL and SAT.

For the SAT and ACT, it was a tough journey. I started with the ACTs and could get good scores in mocks, but I fail to get the same scores in actual exams. It took me several attempts before I decided to switch to the SAT. Although I didn’t have a long time to prepare, the results were much beyond my expectations. The SAT felt calmer for me, especially the reading portion was less stressful. So I think one doesn’t have to be stuck on one option when you have multiple to choose from. Do try to get a gist of everything before deciding on one.

Amberley:

Initially, I was interested in three pathways: dance and music, physics and astronomy, and environmental sciences. Me and my counsellors planned to follow my interests and explore all. Along these paths, I attended physics and environmental sciences competitions, as well as the NAQT quiz bowl, a well-rounded competition concerning all subjects. I continued with piano and dance, and by myself I also explored playing other instruments. Later on, I was advised to narrow down to environmental sciences (my intended major) for more depth, like by attending the Pioneer research project. This way, I have fair achievements in environmental sciences and I was able to showcase as many aspects of my abilities as possible.

One experience I'm particularly grateful for is attending the UN’s COP27 climate conference in Egypt. There, I got a firsthand look at policy-making efforts to combat climate change and had the chance to talk with delegates from various fields. This opened my eyes to how multifaceted conservation is a stark contrast to the natural sciences research I'd been immersed in. I was especially moved by the advocacy and innovative solutions proposed by disadvantaged groups and student delegations. Their dedication inspired me to deliver a speech at one of the side conferences, highlighting the importance of including their voices.

Following the conference, motivated by the passion of the participants and the exhibits I saw, I organized a nature-themed concert to promote awareness of current environmental issues. This venture was a blend of my continuous practice in music and arts, enriching my identity beyond just being a conservation advocate. Most importantly, I'm having fun exploring these varied interests.

Amberley:

Initially, I didn’t want to go to the public universities in the US, thinking that navigating through their campuses and resources might be difficult. But my counsellors helped me realize that the large body of students and resources is exactly where their advantage lies. I do have diverse and interdisciplinary interests, so the wider range of curricula public universities provide would fit me well. It might be a challenge for me to be in such a big environment, but once I figure things out, I can use it to my advantage and live a fulfilling college life.

Amberley:

I think the most interesting thing was when I worked on my essays due in the Early Action round. That essay was going to be due so soon, and I’d written 5-6 drafts, but it still wasn’t working. It was past midnight and I was so anxious, so I left a message for Ms. Zhong, hoping she could help me out and check my essay. But she immediately responded and gave me a call to discuss my problems and concerns and helped me calm down. I was so touched by that call, and I knew from that moment on that Ms. Zhong and all my counsellors are always on the same frontline as me. It really motivated me to continue writing, and in the end, that “painfully written” essay ended up being one of my favorites.

Amberley:

Ms. Zhong, Ms. Wang, and I began our journey way back in the summer before high school, and they helped me navigate through these three complex years. I am not much of an extroverted person, so whenever I needed to team up or prepare for large events, they’ve always helped me brainstorm and think things through so I am fully prepared to meet and communicate with a large group. When I am stuck on the college essays, Ms. Zhong’s always been there to point me the way and bring me outside my box for more creative and genuine ideas. Aside from that, they’ve also provided so much emotional support. I did feel really anxious and down when I couldn’t produce the ideal essays, but they’ve always been there to cheer me up. Honestly, I couldn’t imagine anyone being more kind and supportive than Ms. Zhong and Ms. Wang.

Amberley:

By the time the regular decisions were released, I was always telling myself to lower my expectations, so I was so surprised when I saw “Congratulations” on the page. It felt so surreal. But now, thinking back, that decision letter was exactly the opposite of surreal. It was a manifestation of all the hard work that I never thought I could do before I started high school. I genuinely need to thank myself for pulling this off and, most importantly, my counsellors and parents for all their support while I was lost in the "battle."

Amberley:

Do make your high school life and activities about you and what you genuinely want and are interested in. I realized this while writing my essays. If it weren’t for the passion behind what I did, I would never be able to show how remarkable I can be in those aspects. So think about what it is that you truly want, and if you don’t know the answer, I suggest you try more things out. And please feel free to speak out your suggestions and needs! Counsellors at Enreach are all so very supportive and would always stand by your side.
